Rossomahaar's homepage describes the band as "russian black metal". Anyone who has heard this album knows that this is horseshit.
I find this album cringeworthy. Rossomahaar use a saxophone in their music, and it does nothing to enhance their belief that they are an extreme metal band. The first thing I thought of when the sax kicked in was that it sounded like clown music. The weird thing is that Rossomahaar aren't technically a bad band, they just made a dumb choice by using the sax.
The sax at the start of 'Praising The Departure Of Spiritual Strength' is awful. It really sounds like a cross between some random arab desert song and that crappy church hymn 'When The Saints Come Marching In'. It has to be heard to be believed. 'Spectral Prophecy' starts out in similar crappy fashion with that god-awful sax. ARGH. In fact, the harder I tried to ignore the sax to analyze the other instruments, the more it drilled it's annoying sound into my cranium.
In spite of my uncomplimentary comments above, the one good song on this album is 'Of Shadowy Exaltation'. It has a cool swedish style riff in the middle, where the traditional dual guitars are replaced with a guitar and sax in tandem! It's interesting to say the least...
A couple of other points in favour of this album are that the vox are pretty cool and there is an excellent production. I think the band could benefit from bringing on another guitar player to sort out the rhythm section because when the main riffs are playing, the music sounds empty.
01 :: Multilayered Chaos (A Divinity For The Worthless) 02 :: Crescent Moon (The Final Celebration) 03 :: Praising The Departure Of Spiritual Strength 04 :: The Spectral Prophecy 05 :: The Moon, The Sun, The Stars 06 :: Imperium Tenebrarum 07 :: ...Of Shadowy Exaltation (When Night Blackens With Storm) 08 :: 216 (Bonus Track Featuring DJAvad)
